Laser Hair Removal

To ensure safe and effective results from your laser hair removal treatment, please carefully follow these pre-treatment guidelines. Avoid sun exposure for 4–6 weeks before and after treatment, or until your healthcare provider allows it. If you have been treated within 2 weeks of active tanning (natural sunlight or tanning beds), you may develop hypopigmentation (white spots) that can last for 2–3 months or longer. The use of selftanning products must be discontinued at least one week prior to treatment, and any residual self-tanner should be fully removed before your appointment. You may be asked to stop certain topical medications or skincare products 3–5 days prior to treatment. Do not bleach, pluck, or wax the treatment area for 6 weeks before your appointment, as the melanin-containing hair must be present in the follicle to serve as the laser’s target (shaving is permitted). If you have a history of perioral or genital herpes simplex virus, your provider may recommend prophylactic antiviral therapy, and you should follow the directions for your prescribed medication.

After your laser hair removal treatment, it is normal to experience redness and mild swelling around each hair follicle in the treated area. This may last up to 2 hours or longer, and redness can persist for 2–3 days. The treated skin may feel similar to a mild sunburn for several hours. An optional cooling method may be used after treatment for comfort, and a soothing topical product such as aloe vera gel may be applied if desired. Makeup may be worn immediately as long as the skin is not irritated. Avoid sun exposure to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) at all times throughout your treatment series. Do not pick or scratch the treated area, and avoid waxing, electrolysis, tweezing, or any other hair removal methods for 6 weeks after treatment, as these may disturb the follicle. Shaving is permitted between treatments. Several days to weeks after treatment, treated hairs may begin to shed; this is normal and not new hair growth. You may gently cleanse the area and assist shedding by washing or lightly wiping with a wet cloth or loofah sponge. If the underarm area is treated, consider using a powder instead of deodorant for 24 hours to reduce irritation. There are no restrictions on bathing, but treat the skin gently, as you would sunburned skin, for the first 24 hours.
